Kid Project for this Summer

Summer projects are great for all ages.  When the summer heat is a bit much for outdoor play, make it fun inside too. 

Simple felt masks can make for a great day of pretending.  Kids running around the house acting like kittens will be so much better than those kids laying in front of a television all day.

With a little child or adult imagination, you could have an entire forest or zoo of animals roaming around your home. 

 Throw a sheet over a card table for a great den for the human animals - and this could easily be on the patio or in the yard under a shady tree. 

or spread out many sheets for a super cave perfect for an entire neighborhood creatures. 

Last but not least - you could go all out and purchase a nice card table cover or, make a custom table cover.  The custom could be a great project for the family.

Schools Out Projects

You can never have too many projects lined up to keep the kid-os busy during their summer break.  It's nice to have a great assortment and keeping it reasonably priced is equally nice.  If you are like me, my house would fill with the neighborhood kids, bored out of their heads by day 3 of the break. 

Kids love nature and animals and I am so glad they do.  What's a better project than one that helps the wild life and excites the kids too.  Here's one that will teach the kids a bit of recycling also.  Simple, fun, easy and economical.  The feeder we made was made a little simpler by wrapping the twine around the mouth of the bottle and screwing on the lid to hold it in place.  This eliminated the eye hook and to be honest, those tend to tear our before the feeder is empty. 

 

This is the same basic project but with a simple dowel, or again use the wooden spoon, and hang the same way. 

 

All summer long we enjoy citrus fruit.  We peel and slice and sometimes we squeeze it into a refreshing ade type drink.  When the opportunity arises, cut an orange in half, scoop out the insides, poke a few holes about 3/4 inch from top, tie with a bit of twine and fill with your favorite bird seed.

 

And just one more - great if you don't have a family member with nut allergies. 

Tie the twine around the top area of a pine cone, doing this first thing is a must, put a light coating of peanut butter on the cone and roll in bird seed.  Hang and watch the all types of birds flock to this treat.

 

A few things to remember when doing bird feeders is that they are for the birds.  They don't need fancy beads or paint; the birds don't care about those and can only be a danger.  The twine is very inviting to them for nest building so the feeder won't last long without repairs.  And most importantly, always hang the feeder where the birds are safe from predators when feeding.
