I wish I had known about this when my kids were growing up.
After you scoop out and carve your pumpkin, dip it in a large container of bleach and water (use one teaspoon to each one gallon of water). The bleach will kill the bacteria and help your pumpkin stay fresh longer. Once completely dry, just by sitting upside down. While drying, mix 2 tablespoons of vinegar and one teaspoon of lemon juice to a quart of water. Brush this mixture to the dry pumpkin. This will keep your pumpkin looking fresh for weeks.
Seem too early to be talking about carving good ole' Jack ? Never fear. You will be seeing a reminder when the bewitching evening grows close.
